How does the Citi statement to CSV converter work?
It reads the transaction table inside a statement PDF and rebuilds it as structured rows. A bank statement looks like a table on screen, but the file underneath stores text as positioned fragments with no notion of columns, which is why copying a statement into a spreadsheet by hand produces a jumbled mess. The converter maps those fragments back onto the columns they belong to, using a parser tuned to how Citi statements are laid out. You get four columns back: date, description, amount, and whether the line is a debit or a credit. Amounts arrive as real numbers rather than text, so totals, filters and pivot tables work immediately. Nothing is rewritten or interpreted at this stage. The rows you get are the rows the statement listed, in the order the bank printed them.
How long does it take, and is there a limit?
A typical monthly statement converts in a few seconds. The work happens in your browser rather than in a queue on a server, so there is nothing to wait behind and no processing tier that runs faster if you pay. There is no page cap: a three-page statement and a forty-page one both go through the same way, and a longer document simply takes proportionally longer to read. There is no daily quota either, so converting twelve months one file at a time is allowed, if tedious. The practical limits are different ones. A scanned statement, meaning a photo or a scan with no selectable text underneath, has nothing to extract. Password-protected files have to be unlocked first. Both cases are worth knowing about before you start on a stack of statements.
What if I have several statements or several accounts?
This page converts one statement at a time, which suits a single month or a one-off export. Running a year takes twelve passes and twelve files, and stitching those together in a spreadsheet is where most people give up.
